It takes about an hour to walk to the Granattor from the Lammersdorfer Hütte — with panoramic views stretching as far as the Hohe Tauern.

Wear sturdy shoes — and, for younger children, choose the easier obstacle courses.

It links up well with the Nockalmstraße.

Set your sat-nav to ‘Innerkrems’ — the southern entrance at Ebene Reichenau is on the other side from where we are. There are plenty of alpine huts where you can stop for a bite to eat.

Floodlit until 10 pm — a lovely way to spend the evening. Group races available on request.

Set off early — the approach to the toll booth gets congested quickly on fine days. Head for the Edelweißspitze for panoramic views all round.

Open in the afternoon — in the morning, you can explore the Maltatal.

Pack a change of clothes — everyone really does get wet here.

Wonderfully cool on hot days — sturdy footwear is recommended.

The mountain air is refreshing up here — noticeably cooler than in the valley on hot days. Allow plenty of time for the journey from the toll booth.

Give them a call in advance — the guided tours are often fully booked in summer. In Hüttenberg, the Heinrich Harrer Museum is right on the way home.

Combine this with a trip to Lake Wörthersee — after visiting the zoo, head to the lido in Velden, about 15 minutes further on.

Have something to eat before you start the climb — the walk through the 14 gates takes a while.

Right next door is Minimundus, with miniature versions of famous buildings. It’s a great place to visit as part of the same trip.
